Tzedek Chevrati: Jewish Social Justice
In cooperation with Uri L'Tzedek
The Orthodox Social Justice Movement
Session 3 (July 1 – July 13):
Mornings Will be devoted to analyzing the body of Halacha and Jewish thought pertaining to the Torah’s approach to social justice. We will look abstractly at how the Torah frames issues of rights vs. obligations, commitments to Jews & gentiles, universalistic & particularistic values, and different models of social change. In particular we will discuss more specific social justice topics from a Jewish lens such as poverty, criminal punishment, ethical kashrut, mental health, environment, genocide, business ethics, and more.
Afternoons Will be devoted to Jewish philosophy and Tanach. Shiurim will focus on comparisons between secular and Jewish philosophy and comparisons between biblical criticism and classic Jewish commentary.
The curriculum is being developed and overseen jointly by YTYH staff and Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz who will also serve as a senior lecturer throughout the program.
